Top News Of The Day

  • Google is doing some merging

    • Google is consolidating its AI research divisions to form a new unit called Google DeepMind, which combines the DeepMind team and Google Brain team from Google Research. The aim is to work closely across Google's product areas and deliver AI research and products. A new scientific board will be created to oversee research progress and the unit's direction, led by Koray Kavukcuoglu, VP of research at DeepMind. Jeff Dean, Google Brain co-founder, will serve as the chief scientist for both Google Research and Google DeepMind.

While DeepMind and Google Brain have mostly worked harmoniously together, there have been challenges regarding autonomy and financial aspects. Recently, DeepMind has gained more importance within Alphabet as the company competes with rivals like Microsoft and OpenAI in revenue-generating AI.

Google is reportedly working on new AI projects like Gemini and Magi to stay competitive. Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasizes the importance of AI for the company's mission and believes that the formation of Google DeepMind will enable the bold, responsible development of general AI.

  • Amazon aims AI at movies

    • Amazon has introduced a new tool called "Dialogue Boost" to enhance the dialogue in movies and TV shows on its Prime Video platform. This AI-based tool isolates dialogue in a scene, allowing users to raise the volume when necessary and making it clearer when background noise is high. Designed for people with hearing loss, it can also be used by anyone to personalize volume levels. Amazon is the first streaming platform to offer this technology, which is available on select Prime Video content, reflecting their commitment to creating an accessible streaming experience for all customers.

  • Elon wants to create a truth seeking AI

    • Elon said the reason for building this is to have a 3rd option to Google/DeepMind and Microsoft/OpenAI. The goal of his AI would be to “do more good, than harm”. Elon also described the AI he’s going to build to be a “Maximum Truth Seeking AI, that tries to understand the nature of the universe…an AI That cares to understand the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe, hopefully”

  • Microsoft making AI chips

    • Microsoft is secretly developing its own AI chips since 2019 to reduce reliance on Nvidia and cut costs. The project, codenamed Athena, aims to create chips for large language models like GPT-4. Nvidia's AI server chips, such as the A100, are in high demand, with OpenAI needing over 30,000 for ChatGPT commercialization. Microsoft's chips won't directly replace Nvidia's, but can significantly lower expenses as AI-powered features expand across Microsoft's products.

Microsoft has also been working on ARM-based chips for servers and potential future devices. Tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Meta have also developed in-house AI chips, though many companies still depend on Nvidia for large language models.
